INSIDE No.9 fans were left in tears as the comedy came to a close after a decade on screens.

The award-winning series had an experimental concept, where each segment was purely linked by the appearance of the number nine.

Each stand-alone episode featured new characters and a fresh location.

Even the genre constantly changed, switching between horror and comedy.

Show bosses Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith revealed that the BBC series would be coming to a close after its ninth season earlier this year.

Steve told devastated viewers: “This takes us to 55 episodes, a very decent innings. Mixed emotions but can’t wait to share what we’ve made.”

The last episode aired last night and took place largely inside of toilet cubicles.

It saw Katherine Parkinson and Tim Key complaining about colleagues while attempting to snort a line of coke.

In a self-referential moment, show co-creator Steve told actor Nick Mohammed that he was done with comedy partner Reece, and had decided to trade in working with the Beeb for the big lights of Hollywood.

The finale took an emotional turn as Reece pleaded with Steve in an attempt to save their partnership, telling his co-writer: “You’re my only friend.”

Fans were moved by the heartbreaking segment, and took to social media to share their thoughts, with one gushing: “Well that was a simply perfect end to Inside No.9…laughter, tears, and brilliance abound.”

Another added: “Wow. I don’t normally tweet anything but as a huge fan of Inside No.9 I wish to express my gratitude and astonishment at how beautiful the final episode was. Thank you guys.”

A third shared: “I’m all over the place. Emotional damage!!! Whatever is next I cannot wait.”

Someone who grew up with the show admitted: “INSIDE NO 9 finale got me in the guts. Reece and Steve translated the voyeuristic fascination of peeking behind closed doors into a deeply human, often deliriously twisted collection of stories.

“Started when I was 13, ended in my mid-20s. Today, a special chapter has closed.”
