Matt joined the smash hit Channel 4 soap as Max Cunningham after taking over from Ben Sheriff in 1997.

But since leaving the soap in 2008 he has swapped being in front of the camera to being behind it, and now makes documentaries and short films.

Announcing his latest project, the unrecognisable star said: “Exciting project finally into it’s final stretch – after months of planning we move forward to use immersive to tackle knife crime.

“How? In what way? All will be revealed.”

Matt’s character Max was a fan favourite and viewers followed his antics with his friend Sam “O.B” O’Brien closely.

The pair were joined at the hip but their friendship was put to the test on numerous occasions, including during Max’s relationship with Clare Devine.

Max went on to be romantically involved with Steph Dean but he was fatally struck on his wedding day by the car of his drunken rival Niall Rafferty in 2008.

Since leaving Hollyoaks, Matt and O.B actor Darren Jeffries remained pals and ran a production company together called Little Jeff Productions.

Matt is also a vocal coach and his voice was used in various Game Of Thronesvideo games.

But these days he spends his time making films.

Speaking about his career change, Matt said at the Business Rocks conference in 2017: “I make films, tells stories.

“We’ve got these brand new tools with VR that allows us to not only tell you a story but stand you in the room with the characters, that’s very exciting!”

Matt went on: “My background is acting, and so I think I’m fairly good at taking actors through the scene, giving them the tools to translate what’s on the page into something tangible for the viewer.”

The filmmaker added: “Directing for me is all about being brave – I started small, short films, music videos event coverage.

“Coming away with something that the other guy didn’t get, gets your work noticed.”
