What is Cooking Up Murder: Uncovering the Story of César Román about?

Netflix documentary series Cooking Up Murder: Uncovering the Story of César Román follows the story of a murder case implicating a Spanish chef.

The three-part series explores a case where César Román built a career through using a series of false identities.

The synopsis reads: “This docuseries analyses a murder case implicating a Spanish chef, who built a career in the spotlight through a web of secrets and false identities.”

Is Cooking Up Murder: Uncovering the Story of César Román based on a true story?

Yes, Román was a restaurateur and became known as “the king of cachopo” throughout this career – cachopo is a dish similar to a cordon bleu from the Asturias region in the north of Spain.

However, his cooking career came crashing down when he was arrested in November 2018 for the murder of Heidi Paz.

Román met Paz in April 2018 when she started working at the cider house he ran in Madrid.

Shortly after they met they became romantically involved and moved in together.

However, in June of that same year Paz began to question their relationship so she left him a note informing him that she was leaving the house.

On August 5 she tried to contact him again before going to the home they had both shared so they could chat.

This was the last time she was seen alive.

She was his 25-year-old girlfriend at the time.

He fled Madrid after and began working in a restaurant in Zaragoza, Spain where he was using a fake name.

Police eventually captured him after a three month nationwide manhunt.

It was reported that Román killed her and dismembered her before putting her remains in a suitcase.

The trial of Román made headlines across Spain before he was found guilty of his crimes in 2021.

During the trial he maintained his innocence and claimed his former partner was either living in her native Honduras or had been killed by an alleged organized drug gang.

Román was sentenced to 15 years in prison following a unanimous guilty verdict – which is where he is now.

He was also ordered to pay compensation to the victims mother and children of nearly €250,000.

He appealed the sentence in 2022 but this was rejected by the court.
